Portrait of Play 2017, Week 35

I have girly girls. I’m not sure how it worked out that way. I remember I was first puzzled by this phenomenon when Charlotte was probably a little over a year old and started carrying everything around as a purse. I’m a bag lady, not a purse person. My bags are about as baggy as they come too; canvas, no frills, utilitarian bags. Chuck would be obsessed with the jewelry of her grandmas and her aunt, and she coveted anything that shimmered and shined. Winnie quickly responded in similar ways as a baby and loves getting her nails and makeup done by the relatives of hers who have these things. James is a little troubled by these obsessions, but I’m not concerned. While I’m never going to be a Toddlers in Tiaras mother, I don’t mind if they play around with dressing up and making themselves up in the same way that I won’t mind if Roland wants to do the same. Of course, he deemed this particular dress up session a snoozefest, but I am sure he will have plenty of opportunities for makeovers in his future. I always tell James that I loved playing dress up and doing makeovers as a kid, and I don’t wear makeup at all anymore. Better to let them go crazy experimenting with it now instead of in high school. Still, I have never bought them any makeup, nail polish, or princess dresses. Somehow, in their short lives, they have been given more of all of these things than I have owned in my entire adult life. The fairy outfit Charlotte is wearing was most recently given to her by a friend who had outgrown it. And as far as the lederhosen are concerned, it’s what Winnie picked out from the dress up bin. She can thank our friend the Swiss Miss for those.
