Portrait of Play, Week 49

Chuck is really into Christmas this year. She has all sorts of questions about Santa and Baby Jesus and wants to listen to Christmas music all day. Last weekend, James hung up lights on our house for the first time, and it’s pretty exciting driving home at night to see our house lighting up the street. We finally pulled out some of the decorations, and the girls spent the day decorating their little tree, taking strands of lights and garland on and off the tree, rearranging the ornaments, and turning the lights on and off. We threw some gold tinsel around any available nail in the wall, and voila, it’s Christmas in the playroom anyways. James and I haven’t started making our tree yet, but we have a plan.

Chuck changed into her current favorite ballet dress and went outside to dance in the front yard. Her dancing was more like running around in circles while singing her favorite Christmas songs, but I think the dress made it seem more like dancing. Winnie would not dance because she wanted to see the video on the phone that was playing the music (the downfall of using YouTube to play holiday music). I was having fun playing around with the camera, but Winnie was just not having it, so we went inside. She has been a little rough around the edges these days. Me too. I’ve been tired and cranky. I keep saying, “All is calm, all is bright,” to myself in an effort to feel it…or at least to get a good chuckle about how so very not calm things often are. I’m adding “make myself get more sleep” to my mental list of resolutions for the new year.
