Portrait of Play, Week 29

Since we are housesitting, and since it’s been so very hot, it only made sense to get out the sprinkler and water the yard and the kids for a bit. I think the kids were in their swimsuits for more hours than they were in their street clothes on this day…as should always be the case in the summer. Winnie was in love with all the big neighborhood kids who made sure she was not left out of any of the fun, including getting water poured over her head. It was a day of what summers are made of…grassy feet and bottoms, sprinkler games, and then a sudden threat of a storm that sent us all inside.

As I was watching the kids, I couldn’t help but notice how Charlotte and Winnie approach situations differently. While Winnie busts her way into the middle of it all and works the kids to get what she needs, Charlotte skirts around the scene. She’s always aware of what’s going on and is often involved, but I will see her hanging back or on her own having a terrific time in her imagination. Chuck kept her eye on Winnie as she was getting water poured over her and even after she felt like it was safe enough to leave the scene, she kept peering out to check on her sister.
